SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
With the burden of being the most famous wildlife park in the world, it is easy
to brace yourself for dissapointment, but the Serengeti lives up to all of it's
hype. The Serengeti consistantly proves why it earned such a legendary status
and often surpasses what many thought would be unsurpassable. The largest
national park in Tanzania and perhaps the most spectacular park in the world,
the Serengeti covers some 14,763 square kilometers including large plains,
short grass plains, kopjes, and lakes. The name “Serengeti” is derived from the
Maasai language meaning “endless plain”. Every year, more than 1 million
wildebeest travel in long caravans across the plains of the mighty Serengeti, all
in search of better feeding grounds, followed by a large variety of other
animals. Not far behind followed by a large variety of other predators such as
leopards, serval cats, and jackals watch the wandering game with interest, and
elephants, rhinos, and buffalo continue their grazing. If your time in Tanzania
permits, a trip to the Serengeti is a must. To properly appreciate the Serengeti
however, it is advisable not to make this a rushed trip. Overnight camping in
the Serengeti is permitted and there are some lodge options within the park but
game viewing is permitted inside of vehicles only. The best times to visit are
March through November. The ideal months to view the migration are mid May,
June, July and early August.
